"Garden Route Meander"

Ride this scenic route from Cape Town past the most southerly point of Africa, through spectacular mountain scenery, fertile valleys, wide open plains and along the idyllic coastline. The ride ends at the friendly city of Port Elizabeth, now also known as Nelson Mandela Bay.
Places we visit will include, Cape Town, Cape Agulhas, Karoo, Oudshoorn, Garden Route, Knysna, and Port Elizabeth.

Detailed Itinerary:

Day 1: Arrival, collecting of Bikes, and tour briefing.

Day 2: The ride soon leaves the main beat behind. The route along False Bay must be one of the world’s most beautiful rides. In our southern winter whales aplenty are to be seen. Hermanus, set along the steep cliffs of Walker Bay has become known as the whale capital of South Africa. A pit stop at the Birkenhead Brewery along the way should not be missed! The route now winds through the rolling wheat lands of the Overberg region to Cape Agulhas, the most southerly point of Africa. There is something about this forlorn place that will leave no rider untouched. It is worth spending a night here!

Day 3: The ride now heads north for a while. We pass more wheat lands and wealthy merino sheep farms. In historic Swellendam a morning coffee stop is a must. Then the mountains beckon. The skilfully constructed Tradouw Pass is a rider’s dream. The ride is now eastwards along the legendary Route 62 through the Little Karoo. (The word Karoo means thristland in the indigenous language). This is a strange world of wine farms (famous for fortified wines), hot water springs, moon landscapes and ostriches. The destination for the day is Oudtshoorn, the Ostrich Capital of South Africa.

Day 4: It is time to get back to the coast, but not by means of the conventional route!
The historic Montagu Pass takes our morning ride across the impressive Outeniqua Mountains. We are now on the famous Garden Route. But once again we deviate from the busy N1. We continue on the unconventional! The lovely Seven Passes route between the two main centres, George and Knysna, is seldom travelled and an ideal place for an idyllic ride through steep river passes, dense coastal forests, scenic farmland and a place where once gold was found! Oysters and locally brewed beer awaits the rider in Knysna. A boat cruise on the lagoon might just be what a tired adventurer needs.

Day 5: Today the Tsitsikamma (place of many waters) awaits the rider. But Plettenberg Bay is along the way and the view across this bay from the Signal Hill must not be passed by. There are great places for coffee and a morning swim in this “playground of the wealthy”. But the road goes on. The famous bridges across the steep gorges of the coastal rivers that cut their route to the sea are remarkable engineering feats. These gorges also explain why the early explorers and travellers avoided the coastal route and rather chose the inland route. The highest bungy jump in the world (216 m!) from the Bloukrans Bridge is certainly worth thinking about, but if one is not intrepid enough, the view from the viewing platform should not be missed. Morning coffee is also at hand here. The ride now takes one into the almost primeval tall forests of the Tsitsikamma as one drops down the steep road to the Coastal National Park. A walk to the impressive suspension bridge over the Storms River is just what a rider needs to stretch those saddle stiff limbs. The Scottish tell us that the brown vegetation-soaked water of the Tsitsikamma is ideal for whiskey! The last leg of the ride takes us along the main coastal route. We cannot escape the national road any longer! Towards evening one rides into the “Friendly City” of Port Elizabeth, where dinner along the attractive beach boulevard is a good way to end a great ride!!
