"Elbe Valley - Upstream"

The tour starts in the town of Lutherstadt Wittenberg. In this town the Reformation began and it is a world heritage site. There are many fascinating historic buildings, churches and museums. In the evening you can have a guided tour with historic clothes and enjoy the town where Martin Luther nailed his famous 95 theses.

The next day you will cycle through beautiful Elbe meadows, heathland and Saxon villages to Torgau. This is the place where Soviet and American troops met on April 25 1945 and finished the World War II. But Torgau’s history dates back more than 1000 years and the Old Town has not been destroyed in the war. Torgau is one of Germany´s most beautiful Renaissance towns and in the 16.Century it was already a political centre of Saxony and the Reformation. From the Hartenfels castle and its tower you will have a beautiful view of the town, the Elbe and its surroundings.

You will drive on to Meißen, the cradle of Saxony, where Europe´s first china factory can be found. Take a stroll through the narrow alleys and enjoy a glass of local wine in one of the traditional wine taverns. To the left and right side, vineyards and little castles are bordering on the Elbe. Many restaurants with open-air facilities invite you for a rest.

After passing by the famous promenade Altkötzschenbroda - the most popular village centre of Radebeul, you will soon reach the Lößnitzgrund Valley and cycle along the railway tracks of the Lößnitzgrundbahn Train. This train is more than 120 years old and the residents call it affectionately “Dackel - sausage dog”. Your path leads to Moritzburg, characterized by a beautiful castle which elector August der Starke used as a hunting lodge.

By lunchtime on the next day you will arrive in Dresden. You can enjoy this charming city with the nickname “Elbflorenz” the whole afternoon. Last but not least you will see Pillnitz Castle, the picturesque Großsedlitz Baroque Garden and the town of Pirna. On your last day you will finally arrive at the Saxon Sandstone Mountains, where you will have from the Bastei rocks a magnificent view of the world-famous sandstone cliffs of Saxon Switzerland. You will also visit Europe´s biggest mountain fortress called Königstein.

Special Hints: You are riding up the Elbe River. Probably you will be cycling easy. Because the wind is usually coming from the north, you will not have to face the headwind.
