"Cister and the Religious Architecture in Portugal..."
The Cistercian Order, settled in Portugal since the 12th century, accompanied the formation of the territory and the political affirmation of the first dynasty. Progressively extending their monasteries in the central and northern regions thanks to a special royal protection, the white monks decisively contributed to the colonization and development of huge areas they occupied, applying innovative and intensive agricultural techniques. The monasteries, that followed very similar methods of implementation and distribution in space, also revealed related architectonic and constructive parts, conferring an undeniable familiar aspect. Many of them still today preserve important artistic treasures that include “azulejos” artwork, paintings, gold artwork, sculptures and other testimonies of the evolution of Portuguese art during the past centuries. Still, what turns them unique in our eyes is the privileged relation with its surrounding landscapes. If the Cistercian monasteries managed to transform their environment thanks to the cultivation of lands and planning of ingenious hydraulic systems, piping and conducting the flow of the rivers, constructing huge underground pipelines and regularization of the margins of the rivers, today they are part of the huge elements of landscape, increasing their value, that has to be conserved and valorised.
