Approximate time of arrival. Enjoy an en route game drive to the Lodge for your lunch. After lunch proceed with your afternoon game drive in the park.
Nakuru in Kiswahili means "Waterbuck Haven". Lake Nakuru National Park, close to Nakuru town, was established in 1961. It started off small, only encompassing the famous lake and the surrounding mountainous vicinity. Now it has been extended to around 90 square miles. It has unusual but beautiful vegetation. The forest vegetation is covered with Euphorbia, tall cactus like trees and acacia woodland. The forest region is a host to over 400 migratory bird species from around the world. The park's lake is internationally known for its Lesser and Greater Flamingos. Ornithologists often describe Lake Nakuru as "the most fabulous bird spectacle in the world". The Lesser flamingo can be distinguished by its deep red carmine bill and pink plumage unlike the greater, which has a bill with a black tip. The Lesser flamingos are ones that are commonly pictured in documentaries mainly because they are large in number. There are estimated to be over a million Lesser flamingos. These numbers are on a steady increase again. The numbers had been reduced due to the El-Nino weather pattern that flooded the lake, and changed the alkaline concentration. The flamingos feed on algae, created from their droppings mixing in the warm alkaline waters, and plankton. Lake Nakuru National
Dinner and overnight
Day 3-4 Amboseli
Early breakfast at the lodge.
Check out and drive to the Amboseli National Park lying below the most famous symbol of Africa, Mt Kilimanjaro.
Amboseli National Park, covers 150 square miles in southern Kenya, near the Tanzanian border. The name Amboseli comes from the word "empusel," which in the language of the local Masai tribe means "salty dust." Amboseli is indeed dusty, mostly because of its proximity to Mt. Kilimanjaro, a 19,340-foot-high snowy volcanic peak that lies just 25 miles away. From the time the mountain first emerged, between two and four million years ago, Kilimanjaro has periodically erupted -- probably as recently as within the last 10,000 years, scientists say -- and covered the area with dusty volcanic ash. Amboseli is nevertheless quite lush in places, because the melting snows of Kilimanjaro flow underground into the park, continually feeding water to springs, swamps, and marshes. Because of this easy availability of water, Amboseli has always been a favorite spot for wildlife. In addition to the 900 or so elephants that live there, zebra, wildebeests, giraffes, impala, leopards, lions, hippos, antelope, rhinos, wild dogs, hyenas, cheetah, buffalo, and more than 400 species of birds all gather in the haven of the park.
Day 5 Amboseli Namanga Lake Manyara
Early morning game drive. Breakfast at the lodge. Check out drive to Namanga border, switch vehicles and proceed to Arusha arriving for lunch.
Lunch in Arusha. Proceed to Lake Manyara National Park
On arrival you will be shown to your rooms
Lake Manyara: The cleavage, known as the Great Rift Valley, can be identified from the space shuttle as the most distinctive feature of the continent. The seam of this cleavage has developed a series of fascinating and beautiful lakes. Manyara is a fantastic big game park. The variety of habitats parallels its exceptional scenery. Every imaginable East African animal is found here in abundance. There are great herds of buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and several varieties of gazelle. Mahogany, sausage tree and croton are alive with blue monkey and velvets. Some of the most amazingly large families of hippos congregate at the rivers emerging into the lake, and the birdlife are plentiful. Lake Manyara is also known for its “tree-climbing” lions.
Dinner and overnight
Day 6-7 Lake Manyara Ngorongoro Crater
Enjoy a morning game drive in Lake Manyara National Park whose inhabitants include hippos, monkeys, tree climbing lions, flamingos and other variety of birdlife.
Lunch at the lodge.
Then, drive to Ngorongoro Conservation Area via Olduvai Gorge.
NGORONGORO CRATER: Ngorongoro is quite unique as its physical protection from man natural beauty ranks it’s among the most pristine wildernesses on earth. It is regarded as a natural wonder of the world and has been declared a World Heritage Site. It is the largest intact crater in the world, being 610 meters deep, 16 kilometers across and covering an area of 540 square kilometers. On the crater floor, grassland blends into swamps, lakes, rivers, woodland and mountains – all a heaven for wildlife, including the dearest predator population in Africa. The volcanic crater is jam-packed with wildlife, including all the big game. Its pride and joy, however, is that it remains the last great wild refuge for black rhino.
NB: at the Ngorongoro crater you will enjoy one, half day crater tour per day.
