"Traveling Japan? Hike tour of Kunisaki Peninsula"
The guided tour starts with your arrival in Oita province, either by train or air, from the city of Fukuoka, or Tokyo.
During five day hike, we travel approximately 50 km of trails, from rugged ridges to tranquil valleys.
The lodgings are at a Japanese Ryokan, a temple, and various farm/home stay along the route.
All accomodations are choosen for uniqueness, service and convient location for our hike and proximity to hot spring baths.
Prices based on double occupancy but single rooms are available during most seasons. There may be minor seasonal surcharges, so contact us for details. Peak seasons require reservations.
The food is generally Japanese style. Well prepared and healthy. Expect a blend of traditional and modern foods, Japanish western food and family recipe favorites. Special diet preperation is often available on request.
While many tours stress the cultural aspects of Japan, I don't feel that is needed. Japan has plenty of culture and you would have to lock yourself in a closet to avoid Japanese culture.
I would rather stress that this area is untouched by crowds, and the Kunisaki Temple region is still a hiker's treat. Some call it romantic, others call it rustic. Eitherway, it is beautiful and very memorable.
The Kunisaki region was nominated as a World Heritage Site in 2006. Another site was selected and Kunisaki is remains undisturbed, relatively unknown and beautiful.
The price for a five day/ four night tour is $1400 per person USD.
That price includes all food, lodging, entry fees, guide, and taxes.
Basically, everything except travel to Oita, your drinks and gifts.
All luggage other than your day-pack, will be forwarded day-by-day to your next overnight stop or stored while you are on the tour. You do not have to carry a heavy pack.
No tents, no camping and no roughing-it. The trails and mountains are enough challenge and the evenings are relaxed.
This adventure is suitable for the average physically fit person. Children should be 10 years old, or very tough kids.

Special Hints: Kunisaki Peninsula is an small area with several hundred temples and shrines, once a center of Zen Bhuddists tradition in Japan. Unlike Nara or Kyoto, Kunisaki still retains the flavor with pilgrimage trails we explore on a five day hike.
