"Tana Toraja Cultural Immersion"

Discover the friendly and fascinating Torajan people. The Toraja are known for their elaborate traditonal dress, pompous funeral ceremonies, and unique food, drink and customs, as well as their customary tribal villages. Their dwellings consist of traditonal houses in lush, cool mountains and valleys.

During funerals, buffalo are sacrificed, because it is believed that the souls of the slaughtered buffalo will help carry the souls of the deceased to heaven.

The slaughtered buffalo (and sometimes pig) are feasted upon at the ceremony in traditional dishes such as pa'piong, where the meat is cooked on a fire in bamboo tubes with lots of spices.

Toraja is also famous for coffee (some say theirs is the best in the world; Starbucks certainly imports plenty), cocao, and "tuac" or palm wine.

Events on the tour include a Torajan Funeral (guaranteed from August to December) trekking through scenic mountains and valleys, and traditional villagesstone graves (custom dictates that you ask permnission of the deceased before photographing), optional mountain biking, a trip to the fabled cave burial site in Londa guarded by wooden effigies, coffee and cacao tour, and plenty of time participating in life with the local families enjoying their unparalleled hospitality.
