"Amazon / Peru - Bolivia - Brazil"

Quem já tomou a aqua da Amazônia volta sempre.
(Who drank once the water from the Amazon will always return)

24 days of adventure are waiting for you! Travel through a mysterious world almost untouched by tourism.

Come along and join our unique trip from the source of the Amazon River into the steaming Amazon basin. Off the beaten track we travel by little boats, bush planes, trucks and old wooden cargo ships through the Amazon… You will enjoy exotic, wild animals in one of the biggest rain forests on earth. Your days will include watching illegal gold searchers and Brazilian nut pickers at work, taking part in mysterious Shaman ceremonies and living with jungle farmers. Look forward to bathing in the ocean and enjoying beautiful beaches in the middle of the jungle or going on old freight steamers towards the Amazon metropolis of Manaus. We will visit various bars, dance and get into close contact with the locals. You are guaranteed a one-of-a-kind trip! Each day will be different and each human encounter will awake curiosity.

Tour Description & Services:

Day 1: Arrival in Lima
Today you will arrive in Lima. You will be transferred from the airport to your hotel and enjoy a quick tour briefing. You will spend the night in Lima.

Day 2 - 4: Acclimatization
From Lima we will head to Arequipa, a beautiful town up on more than 2,000m. To acclimatize we will leave for Chivay the next day (3,600m). Here we will spend the following two nights, visit the hot springs and trek up to 4,200m to see beautiful volcanic geysers. Thus, we will slowly get used to the height and enjoy a fascinating landscape at the same time. In Chivay we will be given the possibility of storing our baggage during the following trek.

Day 5 – 7: Trekking Tour Peru (Source of the Amazon)
In July 2000 an international expedition of 22 participants set out to find the source of the Amazon River. This trip was supported by the “National Geographic Society’s Expeditions Council.” They confirmed the Apurimac River being the source of the Amazon. It springs in 5,600m altitude from the lagoon “Nevado de Mismi.” We will have the chance to visit this lagoon on our three days trek through high mountains accompanied by a team of expert Peruvian mountain guides. The personal baggage we will carry ourselves. The rest of the equipment will be carried by mules. The last night of our trek will be spend in Chivay again.

Day 8 - 9: Cuzco & Machu Picchu
Today we will head for Cuzco, the legendary capital of the Inka. There the day will be at our own disposal. We have the possibility of visiting the famous ruins of Machu Picchu (optional).

Day 10 – 15: Jungle Tour (observing animals), Caboclo-Family and Shaman Ceremonies - Peru
You will depart Cuzco by airplane. We will fly over the impressive Andes into the steaming Amazon region of Peru. There you stay overnight in the lively city of Puerto Maldonado. You will be amazed by the multitude of motorcycles. We will cross the national park of Tambopata by boat and enjoy the diversity of the wildlife. Deep inside the jungle and far away from any civilisation we might see macaws and parrots, water pigs, monkeys, caimans, butterflies, toucans and tropical birds. With some luck you may also see some wild cats, tapirs, boas, anacondas and tarantulas. You will spend one night in the company of a jungle farmer’s family. Guided by a real shaman you will try a hypnotizing drink called Ayahuasca. This will for sure be one of the most unforgettable moments of our expedition! Ayahuasca means in Quechua “Liana of the soul” or “Liana of the dead.” It is used by the shamans to communicate with the world of the spirits.

Day 16 & 17: River expedition Bolivia (Gold Digging & Brazil Nuts)
From Peru we cross the border to Bolivia with our roofed, motorized boats. Here we will visit the charming settlements of Brazilian nut pickers and see gold diggers with their “washing machines”. After that you will get on an open pick-up truck that will take you through the deep jungle to Brazil. On our way we will cross some rivers by “innovative means of transport.”

Day 18 & 19: Rondónia / Brazil (massive clearing, jungle beaches and old railroads)
Today we arrive in the remote area of Rondónia, where the massive clearings of land by fire can be seen. While taking a bath on a lovely jungle beach in Pôrto Velho together with the locals, you will have the possibility of talking to the settlers and learning a lot about their way of life. Moreover, you will visit the interesting train museum of Pôrto Velho. Railway construction in this area only started about 150 years ago - before that the area was undiscovered jungle. Together with the railway people from all over the world came and settled.

Day 20 – 22: Trip on cargo ships round Brazil
The following three days we will head downstream Rio Madera on board of a wooden cargo ship. We leave Pôrto Velho in destination of a little trade city, reachable only by small bush planes or our cargo boat. The nights will be spent in hammocks. We will get in close contact to the Brazilians and our guide will be happy to help translating the interesting pieces of conversation.

Day 23: Amazonas Metropolis – Manaus
This morning we will take a bush plane to Manaus, the lively and multicultural “gate to the Amazon”. Here we will visit the famous opera. During the delicious farewell dinner we will talk about all the unforgettable moments we spent together on our unique expedition!

Day 24: Departure
Manaus can be left by plane in the late evening of the 23rd day (23:00h) until about 15:00 the following day.

Contrast Getaway Adventures is a small team of travel-loving professionals and dedicated guides who work together to ensure that everyone who joins in on our adventures experiences the great thrill and freedom of travel whilst enjoying high levels of care and safety standards.

The company was founded in January 2001 by Liz Hine and Lars Krüger, both of whom have lived, worked and studied in Asia, Latin America and Southern Africa (and of course taken every possible opportunity to get out there and explore!). The first adventure we organised was a crossing from east to west of the Kalimantan region in Borneo, a combination of trekking through rainforest and mountain landscapes, and along the island`s many riverways, either camping out under the stars or staying in the tradtional guesthouses of the Dayak tribe. The trip is still up and running under the Trans Borneo Exploration! Since then, Contrast has gone from strength to strength, planning exciting new routes, stretching across the continents to East and Southern Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America. New routes are always bubbling in the pipeline so watch this space for upcoming adventures…

Our company motto "beyond the horizon" illustrates what we strive to share with our guests - just getting out there and doing it - discovering new worlds and meeting people with refreshingly different world views. That´s why we choose to travel in smaller groups to encourage a friendly "team" atmosphere, to get to know each other and share our experiences. It is very important to us that we do not just travel with our eyes closed, but show respect and openness to other cultures, and to remember that things won´t always work in the way we expect them to! If you travel with a sense of humour, openess and team spirit, you can be guaranteed the trip of a lifetime, and of course our knowledgeable and enthusiastic guides are always at hand to fill you in on all the background details and make sure the whole show runs smoothly!

We are sometimes asked why we chose the name "Contrast Getaway Adventures", and we agree it is a bit of a mouthful! As usual some strong teamwork came into play, having agreed that it should end with the word "adventure", we scratched our heads and pondered over how to convey what our company means to us and to our customers. In the end we put the words "contrast" and "getaway" together to define a strikingly different kind of trip, to touch, taste, and experience new worlds, instead of just sitting back and observing. However, to save time and breath friends and aficionados often just refer to us as "Contrast"!

Please feel free to get in touch with us if you have any comments, questions or suggestions. We realise that the experts on our service are our customers, and we welcome free and open interaction. So, if you have any ideas on how we can improve our services (from routes to information, webpage …). For advice and help planning your own routes we are more than happy to help.
